Honorable Representative and Madame Székely, Excellencies of the Diplomatic Corps, Honorable Representatives, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am greatly honored to join tonight’s Hungarian National Day reception. On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China, I offer heartfelt congratulations to the government and people of Hungary on this joyous occasion.
Tomorrow will mark the 58th anniversary of Hungary’s 1956 Revolution, during which the desire of the Hungarian people for freedom and democracy shook the entire world. Today, Hungary and Taiwan share the values of freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights; and these constitute a solid foundation for the further development of relations between our two countries.
As a nation for over a thousand years, Hungary enjoys a rich and diverse cultural heritage. Located at the heart of the European continent, your country has, through close and frequent contact with various peoples over more than ten centuries, amalgamated a wide variety of cultural practices and customs spanning music, the fine arts and architecture. Taiwan and Hungary signed a working holiday agreement earlier this year, which has been unanimously adopted by Hungarian Parliament a few days ago. Our youth can take this opportunity to experience in person Hungary’s history, culture and its current development.
As an important member of the Visegrád Group, or V4, your country held the rotating presidency of the V4 during the second half of 2013 and the first half of this year. Thus, the Hungarian Trade Office held the V4 Central European Cultural Festival in May, showcasing the music and films of central Europe. Without question, it was a great success, and as a celebrated violinist and gifted dancer―Representative and Madame Székely―you are each consummate examples of the unique charm and rich diversity of Magyar culture, and aptly demonstrate how diplomacy itself can truly be an “art”!
Bilateral relations between Taiwan and Hungary in such areas as trade, cultural exchanges and technological cooperation have grown steadily. Hungary has already become one of our most important Central European trade partners. In 2010, we signed a double taxation avoidance agreement, setting a precedent for our signing such agreements with central European countries, and facilitating bilateral trade and investment. Currently, many high-tech firms from Taiwan have invested a cumulative total of 500 million US dollars in Hungarian manufacturing facilities. For Taiwan’s business sector, Hungary can function as a major gateway for access to the European market. Conversely, Taiwan for Hungarian and other European businesses represents the optimal springboard into the mainland China market.
Taiwan and Hungary have also developed close exchanges in areas other than trade and investment, such as agricultural cooperation, for example, where we have signed an MOU to collaborate more closely in the future. With this excellent foundation, Taiwan and Hungary can look forward to continued enhancement of bilateral cooperation and exchanges to create a mutually beneficial “win-win” outcome for both of our countries.
In closing, I stress that we cherish our friendship and cooperation with Hungary, and thank Hungary for its support of Taiwan’s campaign for enhanced participation in the international community. Now, I propose a toast: to everlasting friendship between Taiwan and Hungary, and to the prosperity of the Hungarian government and people on this eve of Hungary’s most splendid national day!
